Island Bohemian

Egham Outdoor BC v Island Bohemian BC

Saturday 6th July 2025 at Fry Island, Reading

A unique and memorable day unfolded as 24 of us Egham Bowlers travelled to play a friendly match against the Island Bohemian Bowls Club - located on an idyllic, very small island in the middle of the Thames, just on the outskirts of Reading.

After hailing the boat each car load of players were transported across the water in true island fashion, adding a touch of adventure to the day's proceedings. On arrival we were warmly welcomed and prepared ourselves for the afternoon's play across all six rinks.

The match was played in a spirit of friendly competition with the British summer making its presence known ! We experienced a mix of blue skies, sunshine, ominous clouds, wind and thunder and lightening whereby a short five minute pause was required to allow a heavy shower to pass through. Despite the mix of weather our spirits remained high throughout.

The green played heavier than we are used to back at Egham, but most of us soon adapted. Our teams found their rhythm and by the end of play we had very large victories on four of the six rinks which resulted in an overall win for us.

Following the match we were treated to a ploughman's meal and drinks in the company of our welcoming hosts. Much friendly banter followed and to round off the afternoon our captain of the day requested a rendition of the Island Bohemians' club song - a request that was happily fulfilled much to our delight.

With smiles all around and the sun shining again we were ferried back across the water to our parked cars, marking the end of what was, as always, a friendly and fun-filled afternoon of bowls and camaraderie.
